May's topic - Basic Research - are we falling behind? was spurred by Thomas Friedman's NYT article "I just saw the future. It was not in America". That article reported on China's focus on STEM education, AI and innovation ecosystem - and asserted that the US is falling behind. If we are, what should we do about it?
How important is basic research for our future? And are we doing enough?
How should it be funded and conducted? Corporate and private funding vs government? Corporate research vs grant-funded university projects?
Should different sectors approach basic research differently (eg AI vs biotech vs green tech, etc).
Please come with your thoughts and experiences on this important topic.
