Title: 'Trenton Makes' to 'Trenton Takes': A Century of Social and Economic Change
Speakers: Chimaobi Amutah '07, Deb D’Arcangelo ’86, Jeffrey Laurenti '71
Description:
At the turn of the last century, Trenton was the robustly growing economic powerhouse of central New Jersey — a manufacturing center, home to such giants as Roebling, Lenox China, and American Standard, and the major retail center between Philadelphia and the New York metropolitan area. Its population and prosperity peaked at mid-century, and a long, seemingly inexorable decline set in. Three Harvard alumni long involved in the city will lead a discussion about what has shaped the past century's dramatic changes in the city and its prospects in years ahead, invoking their personal stories to illustrate the Battles of Trenton.
Speaker bios:
Chimaobi Amutah '07 is a State Data Specialist with the New Jersey Department of Education where he supports chronically low-performing schools — including each of the schools he attended in Trenton — in their utilization of a range of student learning, perceptions, processes, and demographic data to improve student outcomes. A native of Trenton, he graduated from Trenton Central High School in 2003 and holds a bachelor's degree in African and African American Studies from Harvard, a master's degree in education from the University of Mississippi and will be receiving his doctorate degree in education from Rutgers in May.
Deb D’Arcangelo ’86 has lived and/or worked in Trenton for the past 22 years. She co-founded I Am Trenton Community Foundation and has served on several Trenton-based boards of directors. Deb is CEO of Council for Relationships, a Philadelphia-based non-profit serving 5,500 people annually. She was CEO of Planned Parenthood Mercer and currently serves on the boards of NJPP and the NAACP Trenton Chapter. She has an MPP from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School and served as President of the Harvard Club of Princeton approximately 20 years ago.
Jeffrey Laurenti '71 was graduated from Trenton Central High School in 1967 and in the years since has misspent his life in the arenas of civic, political, and international affairs. His greatest achievement was marrying Yuki Moore '79 and getting her to join him in Trenton. The only person ever to have been president of both the Harvard Club of New Jersey and the Harvard Club of Princeton, he occasionally studied government in the Boston area and then took a masters in public affairs from an educational institution in the 08540 zip code.
