In 1998, President Clinton declassified 800,000 photographs from CORONA, the United States’ first spy satellite program, in order to make them available for environmental and historical research.
Since that time, more declassifications have flooded the National Archives with historical imagery from the Cold War era. These photographs no longer have intelligence value, but they are invaluable to archaeologists, since they capture images of sites and landscapes in the 1950s and 1960s. Many of these landscapes have been damaged or destroyed in the intervening decades. At the same time, advances in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs or drones) have turned them into archaeological tools as well.
Since 2012, a Harvard-led research project in the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq is investigating ancient cities and landscapes in the core of the Assyrian Empire (circa 900-600 BC) with a combination of these new technologies and traditional on-the-ground fieldwork.
